Make a UK passport photo at the right size

Online UK passport applications take a digital photo of at least 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels tall, between 50 KB and 10 MB. A printed photo is 45 mm high and 35 mm wide with the head 29 to 34 mm tall. Crop with the guides and download the size you need.

    How it works

    1. Add your photo

Use a sharp photo taken straight on, in even light, against a plain light wall. It opens on your device and is never uploaded.

    2. Crop with the guides

Move and zoom until the head sits between the two ovals. The crop frame already has the right shape.

    3. Download

Get the photo file for an online form, or a sheet of copies to print.

    Questions

What size must a UK digital passport photo be?

At least 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels tall, and between 50 KB and 10 MB. The tool makes the photo 630 × 810 pixels, which keeps the 35 × 45 mm shape and meets both minimums.

What size is a printed UK passport photo?

45 mm high and 35 mm wide. The head, from the crown to the chin, must measure 29 to 34 mm.

Can I edit or retouch my UK passport photo?

No. GOV.UK says the digital photo must be unaltered by computer software. Cropping and resizing to the right size is expected, but background replacement or retouching is not.

Can I print it at home?

GOV.UK asks for printed photos to be printed to a professional standard. Printing at home may be refused, so a photo booth or shop is the safer choice for a paper application.

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. PhotoFit crops, resizes and lays out your photo in your browser. The photo never leaves your device.

    Will my photo be accepted?

No tool can promise that. This one sets the size, shape, file size and sheet layout from a published specification. Head size, expression, lighting, background and recency are your responsibility, and the authority makes the final decision.

How many photos fit on a 4 × 6 inch sheet?

Six 2 × 2 inch photos, or eight 35 × 45 mm photos. Pick a sheet in the tool to see the exact count and a preview, and choose how many copies you want.

What is the difference between online upload and print?

Online upload makes a JPEG with the pixel size and file size an upload form allows. Print makes a larger file at 300 dpi for a given paper size, and the print sheet arranges several copies on one page.

Why is my country not listed?

A country is listed only when its photo rules can be confirmed on an official government page. India and the Schengen area are not listed because no single current official specification could be confirmed.

What does the background option do?

It turns a plain, light wall white. It cannot cut you out of a busy background, and it counts as editing the photo. Some authorities do not accept edited photos, so check first.
