Make a US passport or visa photo at the right size

The US photo is 2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm) with the head 25 to 35 mm tall. For online visa uploads, the State Department asks for a square JPEG between 600 and 1200 pixels, no larger than 240 KB. Crop with the guides, check the numbers, and download the photo or a print sheet.

    How it works

    1. Add your photo

Use a sharp photo taken straight on, in even light, against a plain light wall. It opens on your device and is never uploaded.

    2. Crop with the guides

Move and zoom until the head sits between the two ovals. The crop frame already has the right shape.

    3. Download

Get the photo file for an online form, or a sheet of copies to print.

    Questions

What size is a US passport photo?

2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm), with the head from the top of the hair to the bottom of the chin measuring 1 to 1 3/8 inches (25 to 35 mm) and the eyes 1 1/8 to 1 3/8 inches (28 to 35 mm) up from the bottom of the photo.

What are the digital photo requirements for a US visa?

A square JPEG in sRGB colour, at least 600 × 600 and at most 1200 × 1200 pixels, no larger than 240 KB, compressed no more than 20:1. Head height should be 50 to 69 percent of the image height.

Why is the minimum 54 KB?

The State Department asks for a compression ratio of 20:1 or better. A 600 × 600 pixel colour image is about 1,080,000 bytes uncompressed, and one twentieth of that is 54,000 bytes. A smaller file would be compressed harder than allowed, so the tool pads it with invisible data if needed.

Can I print this photo at home?

The State Department says you may take the photo yourself and recommends a professional service. For printed photos, use the print sheet at 300 dpi on photo paper, and check the rules for your specific application.

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. PhotoFit crops, resizes and lays out your photo in your browser. The photo never leaves your device.

    Will my photo be accepted?

No tool can promise that. This one sets the size, shape, file size and sheet layout from a published specification. Head size, expression, lighting, background and recency are your responsibility, and the authority makes the final decision.

How many photos fit on a 4 × 6 inch sheet?

Six 2 × 2 inch photos, or eight 35 × 45 mm photos. Pick a sheet in the tool to see the exact count and a preview, and choose how many copies you want.

What is the difference between online upload and print?

Online upload makes a JPEG with the pixel size and file size an upload form allows. Print makes a larger file at 300 dpi for a given paper size, and the print sheet arranges several copies on one page.

Why is my country not listed?

A country is listed only when its photo rules can be confirmed on an official government page. India and the Schengen area are not listed because no single current official specification could be confirmed.

What does the background option do?

It turns a plain, light wall white. It cannot cut you out of a busy background, and it counts as editing the photo. Some authorities do not accept edited photos, so check first.
